Caspar Beck

Caspar Beck is an artist based in Pembrokeshire.

A graduate of History of Art and Architecture at Manchester University, Caspar has 30 years of professional experience in the design, architecture and photography sector in Manchester, London and Sydney. As an artist he has previously exhibited and sold at the Royal Academy in London. Galleries in Perth and Brisbane in Australia and in Philadelphia in the USA have also exhibited his work. He returned to Pembrokeshire in 2012 where he paints in his studio at home.

His style of painting is influenced by the cubism, constructivism and futurism movements of the early 20th century and he singles out Georges Braque and Ben Nicholson as key influences. His works sometimes have a theme or subject which is often tantalisingly in reach of the viewer although often his abstractions fully depart  from any realism at all and become pure abstract in form. The influence of design and architecture reinforces the composition of his paintings and shapes are balanced through their 'weight' in the scheme, counterbalanced by opposing forms.

His unique techniques of predominantly using oils and deposits of scraped wood ash on to the canvas allow his paintings to offer more than pure two dimensional viewing but a chance to get up close and see the workings of the paints applications. Using trowels and scrapers are the norm and often the paint brush only makes  an appearance when he signs his work! He is currently exhibiting a number of paintings at the Summer Exhibition at Upton castle, Pembrokeshire and continues to receive representation from there.
