Kath Littler
Growing up near Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, Kathleen Littler (nee Thomas) early developed a wish to depict the beauty of her surroundings in the form of traditional painting media.
After a diploma in Graphic Design/Illustration in 1972 in Bristol Polytechnic, followed by an Art Teachers Diploma, painting continued throughout her life in tandem with teaching. She has exhibited throughout Wales and supplied commercial galleries countrywide with occasional solo exhibitions.
In 2003 she took up wood engraving as a medium ideal for expressing the drama, contrasting light, rhythm and pattern in nature.
Much of her subject matter derives from the coast where she was born and continues to return, as well as visits to North Wales, Orkney and Brittany which are in accord with these early impressions. More recently she has found inspiration in the Black Mountains where she now lives. All her work is rooted in a sense of place.
She believes that to engrave is to re-experience the emotion of being there, and to find expression for that. To draw and design forces the hand to select and simplify and create an image which is not an imitation of nature, but an expression about it which can be a thing of beauty. She believes that to create a thing of beauty which inspires others is one of the highest aims one can have.
Wood engraving, being a strong graphic medium, is also a means of expression of ideas and social comment which she also explores.
She is a member of The Society of Wood Engravers, with whom she has exhibited in their Annual Travelling Exhibition for the last fifteen years. She exhibits in galleries in Wales and Orkney.
