Roger Stephens MRSS
Roger Stephens is a sculptor based in Wiltshire.
Artist’s statement
I have been carving stone since I was eleven years old when introduced to lumps of alabaster at school.
After qualifying as a stone mason, I worked at Salisbury Cathedral on the Spire and West Front during the Major Repair Programme and many churches and buildings in surrounding counties. While there I pursued my passion for contemporary sculpture and organising sculpture exhibitions.
My early sculptures were concerned with nature and how outside influences can have on plants and animals. Later a shift in emphasis towards politics and how and why decisions are made and what the results of these can lead to.
I have always been concerned with line and form, studying Henry Moore, Constantin Brancusi and Isamu Noguchi. From the original idea, I pare it back to its simplest form. Wherever my ideas come from, be it nature, industry, politics, literature, music, I endeavour to imbue the piece with the essence of my original idea.
All my work is in stone with a few works cast in bronze.
After many years as owner of a craft supplies shop, I trained at Weymouth College in Architectural Stone Masonry and Carving where I was awarded the City and Guilds Advanced Craft Diploma with Distinction.
In 2015 I was accepted as a Member of The Royal Society of Sculptors.
Since 1996 I have exhibited in galleries in England and abroad.
